AT&T Weekend Preview: January 10-12 By Chris Lotsbom, ArmoryTrack.com (10-Jan) -- This weekend will be extra special for The New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory. Exactly one hundred years ago Friday, the first track and field meet was contested at The Armory, beginning what has been a century of excellent competition. On January 10, 1914, the Xavier Games became the first track and field meet held at The Armory. To learn all about The New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory's opening meet and history, make sure to check out Doug Binder's article on ArmoryTrack.com. Celebrating The Armory's 100th anniversary on Friday will be the New York City Gotham Cup hosted by New York University. The meet is open to collegiate competitors and athletes by invitation. On Saturday, action continues at The Armory with a pair of high school meets. First, the Molloy Stanner Games will begin at 9:00am, followed by the NJIC Championships at 6:30pm. The Molloy Stanner Games --established by Archbishop Molloy High School-- was first held in 1995. Among those competing in Invitational events are three winners from last weekend's Hispanic Games: Smithtown West's Ben Bonhurst, Northport's Mike Brannigan, and Arlington's Bella Burda. For a complete list of accepted invitational entries, see here. The weekend's action wraps up with the Section I League Meet on Sunday, January 12. Photo/John Nepolitan for The Armory |
